7 Questions to Ask when Checking into a Hotel

Not all hotel rooms are created equal. While some of the hotels that you find along the highway or near the airport have basically the same amenities, the rooms in boutique and higher-priced hotels are usually different. The hotel room you view online may not be the hotel room you get when you check in.

Here are some things to ask the desk clerk at the check-in counter:

• Could I see the room that I’ll be renting? ‒ You may have to wait till they find someone to show you the room, but at least you can decline to stay in that room if you don’t like it.

• How far is the room from the elevator? ‒ Depending on your preferences, you may want to be closer because of convenience or farther away due to the noise.

• When was the last time the room was renovated? ‒ Many hotel renovations are done in stages, and it could be that the room has not been updated in years.

• What is the view? – You may have a view of a dumpster or you may have to pay a little extra for a great view. At least you have a choice if you ask.

• What floor is it on? Rooms on higher floors are usually quieter ‒ however, it may be more convenient for some travelers to be on the 1st or 2nd floor.

• Is there a connecting door? ‒ If there is a connection door, you are more likely to hear what’s going on in the adjoining room.

• Can I get a late checkout? If you ask ahead of time, the hotel will usually allow you to stay in the room a few hours past the required checkout time.
Just by asking these seven questions, you’ll eliminate surprises and get to choose a room accommodation that you prefer, versus someone randomly choosing it for you.
